How to Set Social Media Goals for Your Business, and Then Go Get Them

Setting goals is one of the most important parts of starting your social media strategy. As I like to tell clients, if you know what you want to get out of it, it will be easier to know what you need to put into it. So where exactly should you start with setting these goals? Today we’ll walk you through how to set reasonable, attainable goals and then go out and get them.

1. Set Realistic Goals

While gaining a million followers in a month certainly sounds exciting, it’s not very realistic. Brands take years to grow that kind of following through consistency and hard work. Rather, set goals such as to gain 100 organic followers in the next month, or to improve engagement on posts by 25%. These smaller goals will add up over time and allow you to stay motivated to continue your social media strategy.

2. Write Your Goals Down

It’s easy to forget our goals or give up on them when times are getting tough. Writing down your goals for your social media will not only encourage you to continue but also hold you accountable. In addition, writing down your goals will make them seem more real than simply thinking them in your head. Personally, I love check-lists and there is no better feeling than checking those hard-working goals at the end of a long day, week, month, or year. 

Also, in a few years when you're killing it online, it’ll be fun to look back at how far you’ve come from the small goals you set starting day 1.

3. Create a Plan (and then adjust accordingly)

So you have your goals written down and you’re ready to go, but now what? Now you need to create a plan of action for achieving your goals! Simply posting every now and then, or even every day, on social media won’t do the trick. It’s so important to have a plan in place going forward to follow along. Not only will this make it easier to measure your goals and whether or not you are hitting them, but this will also ensure you are giving your audience well thought out content. This isn’t to say stuff doesn’t come up that may change things, and the plan is a work in progress and can (and should) continue to be altered (even when you have a million followers!).

4. Put In Work

Here’s a little secret for you, creating the goals and a plan is the easy part. I know, that’s a little daunting, but it’s true. Now that you have your goals set and a plan in place, it’s time to go out there and work your butt off to reach them! The amount you put into your social media is how much you will get out, so if you treat it like it’s not a priority, you won’t be hitting (or exceeding) your goals. Allow yourself a certain amount of time each week to focus on your social media plan, as if it is the same as answering emails or reaching out to potential leads. 

So there you have it, seems simple enough right? Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day and it may take some time for your social media to really take off, but through hard work and consistency around a well thought out plan, you will start to see results and hit your goals!
